Community Education Malawi

In May 2023, CUNIMA with financial support from DVV International conducted a capacity development workshop for lecturers involved in the Adult Education and Development Programme. The aim of this activity was to respond to knowledge and skills gaps in the implementation of the adult education programmes and to provide participants with an understanding of the relationship between adult education, socially engaged scholarship and practice, teaching and research.

One of the participatory methods that was used to build knowledge was community mapping which is linked to six broader questions about a community. These include the (a) history of the community; (b) the environment; (c) the residents; (d) organisations in the community; (e) communication – how information is disseminated; and (f) power and leadership in the community.

Participants of the workshop had a chance to have a transect walk for the community profiling exercise in Gulumba village, Traditional Authority Chikumbu, Mulanje District. The transect walk through the village was guided by one of the community members who had a better understanding of the village.
