Who we are
MOJA is an online resource for adult learning and education professionals and practitioners in the public sector, private sector, civil society and academia in Africa. MOJA is not only for educators and learners. Managers, policy- and decision-makers and everybody who has an interest in lifelong learning can find useful, constructive and interesting content on the MOJA platform.
It’s a place to share learning insights, resources and experiences; form connections; and access a wealth of content and use it to realise an informed, educated and thriving citizenry on the African continent.
The platform embraces the inclusive continuum of education, recognising that when we teach, we explore, discover and learn ourselves. Lifelong learning is for all: educators and students alike.
Collaboration is the very oxygen of learning, teaching and engagement. So, MOJA offers interactive platforms (blogs, chat rooms and other engagement features) that make it easy to collaborate and participate.
“MOJA” is the Swahili word for “one”. The word is rich in meaning and resonance, drawing on the power of unity. Adult learning and education advance through partnership, knowledge-sharing and collaboration.
Serving the needs of Africa’s adult educators
Building a professional network is central to MOJA’s objectives. Networks build strength and resilience. They maximise impact. They foster co-construction of knowledge for development and capacity building. And they embed a spirit of solidarity and unity.
Lifelong learning and adult education have the potential to drive people, families, communities and nations forward. They open avenues of possibility, give people better and more opportunities, improve quality of life, grow economies and open the door to a better, brighter, more prosperous future.
MOJA was founded out of the need for adult educators in Africa to have a forum where their collective insights, experiences, resources and wisdom are pooled so that adult education and learning may be advanced.
The MOJA community
All content on the MOJA platform is freely accessible to everybody. However, the “community” feature is only for adult learning and education professionals and practitioners working in Africa.
Community members use the platform to profile themselves and their organisations, to contribute and share their insights, to connect with others and to share news about their events.
The benefits of being part of the MOJA community are multiple:
Gain direct access to other professional adult educators in Africa who may be facing similar challenges to your own; who have insights and successes to share; and who may benefit from your own insights
Get single-platform access to news, insights and developments in adult learning and education to remain up to the minute on this exciting and rewarding field
Stay up to date on events in adult learning and education in Africa – upcoming meetings, seminars, conferences and workshops (both physical and digital) – and post details of your own upcoming events to alert others and invite them to attend

Origins of MOJA
MOJA is based on the Institute for International Cooperation of the Deutscher Volkshochschul-Verband (DVV International) experiences. The organisation commissioned MOJA’s development in South Africa. It has been conceptualised, designed and established jointly with DVV International’s partner institutions across Africa.
